Inlays and Onlays

Often used as alternatives to fillings when repairing teeth damaged by decay or trauma, inlay and onlay restorations are custom-made composite fillings that are securely cemented to the cusps of your teeth.

Onlays are essentially identical to inlays with the exception that they are used to treat larger areas on the surface of the tooth. Reasons for acquiring inlay or onlay restorations include broken, decayed or fractured teeth, cosmetic enhancement, fractured fillings and large fillings.

Steps to Inlays or Onlays

  1. During your first appointment, we take a detailed impression, or mold of the problem area and create a temporary filling to keep the area protected.
  2. The inlay or onlay is produced.
  3. During your final visit, the inlay or onlay is cemented into place and the fit and natural bite confirmed.

Caring for a New Inlay or Onlay

Proper oral hygiene, a healthy diet and regular visits to your dentist will help ensure that your inlay or onlay will last for years.
